Pupils at St Cuthbert’s Catholic Primary School in Crook marked World Mental Health Day with a celebration of creativity, individuality and self-expression.

Classes 3 and 4 explored their artistic talents by creating beautiful artwork inspired by Wassily Kandinsky. Class 3 experimented with pastels, while Class 4 produced colourful tissue paper circles, taking inspiration from the artist’s famous circular designs.

Just like Kandinsky’s artwork, every piece created by the children was unique, reflecting the individuality, thoughts and feelings of each pupil. The activity provided an opportunity for children to express themselves creatively while celebrating what makes each person special.

The school also stepped out in style by taking part in a ‘Dress to Express’ day. Pupils came to school wearing clothes that allowed their personalities to shine, helping to highlight the importance of self-expression and positive mental wellbeing.

Throughout the day, children celebrated both their similarities and differences, embracing the qualities that make each member of the school community unique. The activities encouraged pupils to reflect on their own identities while recognising and appreciating the individuality of others.

World Mental Health Day provided a valuable opportunity for pupils to come together through art, creativity and self-expression, reinforcing the message that everyone is unique and valued.

As part of the day’s reflection, pupils considered the words from Ephesians:

“For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”

The verse served as a reminder that every child is unique, gifted and has an important contribution to make.
